Never say never…

Wanna know what I learned this weekend?

This weekend, I learned that I like salmon.

I have spent 29 1/2 years declaring how much I HATE SALMON.  (Okay, maybe not 29 1/2 years.  Maybe more like… 24 years.  Because I don’t know if I hated salmon when I was a baby or not.)

But for as long as I can remember, I have stood by that statement.  The smell of it.  Ugh.  Loathe and detest it.  Salmon sandwiches?  Barf barf barf.

Most fish in general, actually.  Just not a fish fan.  Except for tuna.  I can deal with a tuna sandwich on occasion.  Which doesn’t make sense to most people, but that’s just the way I roll.

Last night, however, my brother & sister-in-law invited my mom & I over for dinner.  They were catering to everyone’s varied tastes with chicken, steak, and salmon on the menu.  The chicken was for me, the steak was for Luke & Mom, and the salmon was for Amanda.  But I decided to be adventurous and try a very small piece of the fresh salmon, which Amanda had cooked in the oven, wrapped in foil with a seasoning on it.

And it was so so so yummy.

In fact, I went back for seconds.

And then I asked if I ever ordered salmon in a restaurant, if it would taste that good.  (For the record, they tell me it depends.  But if I were at a really nice restaurant, the salmon should be a safe bet.)

Or how – gasp – I could make it at home and make it taste that good.

So the lesson learned this weekend?

It’s “Never say never”.

Happy Monday. :)

I'm the same way - I also said I HATE FISH, if it swims I dont eat it! Buuutttt I started eating some fish last year. I had some salmon last summer, done on the BBQ wrapped in foil with spices and lemon, it was very good! I also sometimes buy the Pan Sear fish by Highliner they are very lightly breaded but Highliner does offer not breaded fish as well. http://www.highliner.com/site/eng/prod_det.asp?product_id_pass=pro0088&product_category_id_pass=prod_cat_11#

I love salmon! It's usually pretty good if you eat it at a restaurant. I've had it a few different places and have been impressed!

I lurve me some salmon! It's super yummy if it's fresh and cooked/seasoned properly. Do you have a Fresh Market in Canada? If so, go to the meat counter and buy a bourbon salmon. You still have to grill or bake it, but it is wonderful. Just melts in your mouth!

I like fish, but have not had lots of luck with salmon. Being far from the ocean makes just about any fish suspect here.

Not a fan of salmon, but we love to broil rainbow trout at our house. But glad you discovered something new that you like and that is good for you.

I'm the same way!! The smell of salmon always makes my stomach turn but I do love most types of fish. I was adventurous once at Boston Pizza. They have a salmon filet with a lemon and garlic herb butter that is glazed over their salmon and I HAD to try it. It was fantastic - at BP of ALL places!! (It was under the healthy choice options)

I cook it in the oven like that from time to time. Matt won't eat it. He "hates" it too. Although, I've never seen him try it. It's great for you!

salmon is great every once in a while though I'm more of a cod person (preferably frozen and caught fresh in newfoundland). But I know what thats like for years I wouldn't eat bell peppers now I love them (though green aren't overly my fave).

Good for you, Jillian! I have to be in a special mood or I won't eat fish. I am allergic to shellfish, the smell of clams will make me sick. But, I am going to my favourite pub, the Henry House in Halifax for fish & chips when I go for my convocation in May. My mouth is watering and I feel a bit homesick for Halifax after looking at the pictures, ha, ha.

My little boy loves Salmon. But I don't buy it anymore....it's gotten really pricey.

Good job branching out! For the record, if it smells, there's something wrong with it. I cook salmon about once a week at our house, and I have an awesome recipe if you'd like it. Salmon is so good-and it's the only fish I'll cook at home. The rest tastes too "fishy" to me.

My kids are the same ... only tuna or fish fingers :) ... so I'm hoping that one day they will realize what they have been missing all these years!

not all salmon is created equal. I have tried several styles and cooked different ways and I'm still picky about it. only center cut planks from wild salmon. I like it grilled or baked. Red Lobster and Outback serve it cooked to order... mine is DONE! And if you want to try another fish, try baked tilapia. or grilled. it is a mild white fish.

Well, welcome!
The good news: most salmon you'll find in stores is Chinook or King (very little Keta/Chum, which is cheaper but has less flavor). It's extremely easy to bake or grill, so long as you don't overdo it- undercooked salmon is fine, overcooked any kind of fish is nasty.
Salmon, being a fattier fish, is nice and juicy and pairs well with citrus, as well as variety of herbs.

The bad news: salmon is suffering from some over-fishing issues, like cod, tuna, and many other fishes. I always encourage people, if they want a white fish, to do with something like wild trout or catfish, which are sustainable fish. There really isn't a good substitute for salmon, though. :(
(Also, farmed salmon has less flavor and is more destructive to the environment than wild-caught, believe it or not, so aim for wild caught if buying to make yourself).

Hey, Jill! Sorry I've been a crappy bloggy friend lately....lots going on....anyway: I love salmon and no one else in the family likes it so I rarely cook it. Sometimes trying new things is good for the soul, huh?!?!?
