Let’s Talk

Today is an important day for raising awareness for mental health issues and suicide prevention.

DIFD (Do It For Daron) has encouraged everyone to wear purple today in support of the cause, and Bell Canada is hosting it’s “Let’s Talk” program today, with every text or long-distance call by Bell customers, and every Facebook share and #BellLetsTalk Tweet for non-Bell customers, they will be donating 5 cents to mental health awareness.

Nothing breaks my heart more than to hear of someone who has struggled with mental health issues taking their own lives.  I often sit back and wonder, “Didn’t they know?  Didn’t they know there were people who loved them; who would’ve been there for them to help them through their darkest hour?”

I know it’s not always that simple for people who suffer from mental health issues and depression to understand that.

But hopefully, by way of days like this with the Bell Let’s Talk campaign, and with the growing momentum of organizations like DIFD, the stigma that goes along with mental illness can be erased and people will feel more free to just talk to someone.

Anyone.

There will always be someone there for you.

Let someone help you.

Open up & talk about it.

You are not alone.

If you haven’t already shared the image on Facebook or used the #BellLetsTalk hastag on Twitter…go do so now, please.

Today, we can all make a difference.

We get to deal with people who have issues, but won't go get help for them. My mom and Nick's dad both have issues and some days are worse then others.

Wow! I guess it does make you wonder if they don't realize they have people there for them.

So sad to realize the hopelessness that some feel. Thanks for the reminder.

I'm a bipolar insomniac with an anxiety disorder. If it wasn't for proper medication, therapy and strong family support I likely wouldn't be alive. I'm going to go change my shirt and put something purple on.

I think every one on the planet has some form of mental illness. Some are better at covering it up than others, some don't cover up and at and seek and accept the help they need, and some simply don't know they are ill. I think we should tell those we see struggling that we are here for them and that we love them, every chance we get, even if they don't understand it at the moment, even if they reject us, let's just keep telling them and stay connected then we won't have to wonder if they knew.. It's battle to be sure but one I am absolutely confident can be won. I think our approach needs to change. Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to fear. People who are mentally ill are not less than.. And yeah.. I've lost a few friends. - Great post Jill..

Truth talking, Jillian, good for you. As the mother of a bi polar child, I know all too much about about mental illness and the toll it takes on families. Being public about mental illness takes it out of the forbidden places and exposes it to light, acceptance and healing.
