What I’m Loving Wednesday

  • Well, I’m loving that it’s finally Wednesday, for one thing!  Why is that when you’re most excited for the weekend, the week drags by extra-slowly? I spent most of yesterday full believing it was Wednesday, before Lindsay finally broke it to me that it was only Tuesday.  ugh!
  • I’m loving that my bridesmaid’s dress for Sarah’s wedding fits!  Well, relieved is more like it. haha!  I think my pre-dress-try-on panic last night was probably not necessary – the dress has fit every other time I’ve tried it on, and we took them in for alterations only 3 weeks ago, seriously, dude, how much weight can you gain in 3 weeks?  But I was panicking nonetheless.  I’m so far off the healthy eating track these days that I don’t even really remember what the “right” track feels like anymore!!  yikes!!
  • I’m loving looking back at pictures from last weekend – a wonderful weekend from beginning to end, with plenty to celebrate!

  • Speaking of pictures… I’m loving that I finally “launched” my Project 365 yesterday (which I started on August 1st).  I finally decided to go with a Facebook album for sharing them,  and the feedback thus far has been awesome.  I have this complex about photo-taking – I feel like I’m being totally annoying and everyone hates the photographer – so it was nice to have people comment with encouragement on my Facebook post.  It was appreciated!

  • Anyone remember the time I was hit with a Philadelphia Smoked Salmon cream cheese spread & Vinta cracker craving?  I’ve been hit with another one these past few weeks.  It has gone unfulfilled thus far , but I just loving the thoughts of it! so weird, but so mmmm…

  • I’m loving the thoughts of pumpkin spice everything… I know that some people find “pumpkin spice season” annoying, but I’m not one of those people.  This morning while I was working out, I was thinking off all the baked goods I want to try this coming fall with pumpkin.  I know… super awesome thing to be thinking about while working out, eh? haha!

  • I’m totally in LOVE with the news that FOX has announced a re-boot of Prison Break!!!  Apparently both Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell have signed on to return in their roles as brothers Michael Scoffield and Lincoln Burrows, and I could NOT be more excited!!!

  • I’m loving that Sarah & Ian’s wedding day is almost here!  I’m so looking forward to Saturday and being part of their special day!!  Can’t wait!!

What are you loving this Wednesday?!

The Tuesday Random

  • It’s a dark, rainy Tuesday here.  There might be something wrong with me, because I’m kind of enjoying it.  A few weeks ago at the Camp, during one of our reminiscing sessions, my mom said something about my dad delighting in dark, dreary days – she said they were his favourite.  That was something I’d forgotten, but it’s true.  I guess I get it from him.
  • It’s Wedding Week for Sarah & Ian, so tonight we pick up our dresses, tomorrow night is rehearsal, Friday night is “get ready” (ie – have everything ready to go for Saturday morning, do my nails, etc.), and Saturday is THE day!!  Last night I enjoyed some downtime ahead of all the wedding excitement – a half hour of Yoga, then I did mundane household chores like dishes and laundry; I caught up on last week’s Jimmy Fallon episodes that I hadn’t had time to watch, and just relaxed on the couch for most of the evening.  After a busy weekend, it was just the kind of evening the doctor ordered.
  • Because of the catch-up on Jimmy episodes, I was treated to this performance by Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats – my new favourite song!  Loved the much-deserved Standing O that the Tonight Show audience gave them … that doesn’t happen all that often!

  • Another musical highlight for me today:  Jason Derulo and Luke Bryan’s Smule Karaoke video of the two guys singing Jason’s hit “Want to Want Me”.   Such feel-good fun!  The world needs more of this!!

  • And yes, one more random musical favourite of mine for today:  R. City featuring Adam Levine with their new hit “Locked Away”.

  • I have been having the BEST summer with books, you guys.  I don’t remember the last time I had such a good run with reading.  I do believe I’m now on the 5th book in a row that I’ve really, really enjoyed.  But I’m saving my list & reviews of my summer reads for a future post… stay tuned!
  • I only had my camera for a short time when I decided to take up the “Project 365” Challenge.  I started a week ago today, but I have yet to post any of these pictures – and honestly, I’m not sure if anyone will care to see them, because most of them have been boring little photo shoots around my own home.  Even so, I’m already feeling like the challenge is beneficial.  It’s forcing me to take the camera out every day, play with the settings, learn by trial and error, and encouraging me to research and look up tutorials online.  I feel like I’m constantly looking around and watching for something to catch my eye.
  • I’ve yet to decide how to “display” my Project 365 photos… do I create a Facebook album for them, do I post them here on my blog?  Do I share them at all??  Still deliberating…
  • I’m at work today, of course, but the dark skies and rain pattering the windows has me dreaming of one of those “rainy, lazy days” at home… I’d love to put a pot of soup or spaghetti sauce on the stove to simmer, curl up with a book and a cup of tea, make popcorn and watch an old favourite movie… my soul is craving a day just like that.
  • I think that’s because what I just described sounds very much like a perfect fall day in my books, and my soul is definitely craving fall… Too soon, Jill.  Too soon.

Hope you are all have a wonderful day! :)

Things I’m Excited About Thursday

In my mind, I’ve had my summer broken up into two sections:  Life before holidays, and life after holidays.  Both “sections” had pretty busy schedules assigned to them, and I thought of my week off as a nice little “pause” in between.

Well, the pause is definitely over now!  Crazy Summer Round #2 is about to begin, and it is bringing with it a PILE of fun (much like Round #1 did!!)

Here are the things I’m excited about coming up in August & September:

This coming weekend.  There is a lot going on this weekend, and I’m excited for all of it!  Friday night is Book Club at my friend Sharon’s house, where we will be reviewing one of my most favourite books that we’ve ever read – Liane Moriarty’s “The Husband’s Secret”.  Saturday morning, I will be attending a bridal shower for one of my besties, Susie.  On Saturday night, I believe I’m having my niece & nephew for a long-overdue sleepover & movie night.  And then on Sunday, I’ll be celebrating one of my favourite wee girls, as Baby Ariella will be turning 1!  I’m looking forward to each and every one of these events with equal amounts of anticipation!

Ariella

Sarah & Ian’s Wedding.  I sort of can’t believe that it’s almost Wedding Day for Sarah & Ian!  I’ve been looking forward to this one for a really long time, and their big day is now just over a week away.  I can’t wait to spend the day getting dolled up with the girls, watching one of my dear friends walk down the aisle to her groom, and celebrating with them as they become husband & wife!

Sarah & Ian 2

Family Visit.  The weekend of August 22-23, my T.O. relatives are coming to the Valley for a much-anticipated visit.  My cousin Paula and her husband Jory welcomed a baby boy in June, and I’m so excited to finally meet little Brody!  Family time has always been kind of sacred to me – I’ve always been a big fan of dinners and get-togethers with extended family, and I’ve treasured those times – so I’m definitely looking forward a good visit with family members from the Schock side of my Family Tree :)

Kids 3 June 7 2015

Sue’s Bachelorette.  I won’t share many details here, in case the bride-to-be is reading this, but August 29th is bound to be a good time as the ladies are taking Sue out for one last rip before she ties the knot!  If Sarah’s bachy in early July is any indication, this is going to be one epic night of fun!!

Shawville Fair.  While it’s true that I no longer look forward to the Fair with the same giddy anticipation that I did in my younger days, it is definitely still a highlight for me on my calendar… if for no other reason than the FOOD!  Fair Food is worth the price of admission alone.  I’m already drooling thinking of Billy T’s pizza, Beavertails, deep fried things that shouldn’t be deep fried, a Barn Burger, poutine, ice cream, fudge, cotton candy… Of course, I won’t eat it all … at least not on the same day ;)  I also look forward to the musical entertainment, and this year I’m eyeing Sunday as my night.  Jess Moskaluke (recently introduced to me by my friend Stacy) and Doc Walker (an all-time country fave of mine) are taking the stage that night, so I’m hoping I can drag some friends up with me to see them!  Other than that, I’m sure my mom & I will continue our tradition of going up once or twice together to explore that exhibits, and if my sister and/or brother are taking their kids up at any point, I might tag along with them as well.

September Birthdays.  My brother Luke will be turning 30 in September, and my friend Stacy also celebrates in September… I’m sure there will be some plans made to mark both birthdays!

Sue & Adam’s Wedding.  Again…can’t believe Sue & Adam’s big day is just over a month away!  I kind of looked at this as the “summer of weddings”, with two of my closest friends getting married just over a month apart, and now that the weddings are almost here, it feels surreal.  Just as I’m looking forward to Sarah & Ian’s, I’m so excited for Sue & Adam as well.  It will be a fabulous day!!

Sue & Adam 3

Nova Scotia.  When my friend Lindsay propositioned going to her parents’ cottage in Nova Scotia sometime this summer, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to fit it in because of all the activities & events already scheduled.  She suggested going for a long weekend once the weddings were over, in late September, and I jumped at the opportunity.  We booked our flight months ago, and honestly, I kind of pushed it to the back of my mind… something I anticipated, but didn’t allow myself to get too excited for, because there was so much to come before it.  But now that it’s August, it feels like the trip to St. Margaret’s Bay is right around the corner!  Time to get excited, Jill!!

Fall.  As we all know, I love autumn.  I’ve done my best to keep my longing for fall things in check this summer – soak up the summer fun, don’t skip it, stay in the moment – but deep inside of me, I’ve been craving all that Autumn brings… In July, it still felt like talking about it was taboo.  But there’s a little bit of nip in the evening air now, the Back To School ads have started to surface (ugh – I don’t like them), and it feels like it’s a little bit OK to start thinking ahead to all the glorious things that the fall will bring…

Fall

Photographing it All!  You guys have no idea how excited I am about my new camera.  I still know diddly-squat about it and haven’t ventured past using it in Auto mode, but I look to all of these fun events ahead and I can’t wait to drag my Nikon along with me to capture it all.   Hopefully I will learn along the way!  One of the photography tips I’ve seen on different websites and blogs for newbies is to take part in a 365 Photo Challenge – take one picture a day for a whole year.  This ensures that you’re getting your camera out and using it, even on days when you don’t have anything really interesting to photograph, which also ensures you’re playing with settings, growing more comfortable, and maybe capturing something magical along the way.  I have no doubt that I will, especially with all the fun slated for the next 2 months.  :)

Oh, vacation. I miss you already.

A few weeks ago, my pals on The Morning Hot Tub radio show on Hot 89.9 were discussing how they feel after taking a week off.  They were talking about how some people feel refreshed, re-charged, ready to jump back into work and are good to go for another few months.

Except for Rush.  He said he comes back from vacation and instantly starts longing for the next one.  Not because he doesn’t like his job, or because he doesn’t feel refreshed and re-charged.  He just really likes being on vacation.

Rush & I?  We be on the same page, yo.

I’m only on Day 2 of life back at work, and oh, how I’m missing those wonderful lazy relaxing days of vacation…

It was a pretty perfect week.  I kicked it off by joining my co-workers at the Mickey Creek Golf Club on the Friday evening for drinks and dinner following the annual company golf tournament (they all golfed, I just drove up later to meet them).  I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with the guys, sipping a delicious Caesar, indulging in a yummy buffet dinner, and soaking up the music on the club house veranda.  I always love a good Mountainview jam session – I work with some very talented, musically-inclined dudes!

MVT Golf 2013 This is an old pic from 2013 – but much the same scene!

Saturday morning, I was up and at ‘em early, doing laundry, packing and getting ready to head to the Draper Camp for a few days.  If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you know that the Camp is one of my happy places – and certainly what I now consider my “home away from home”.  It’s my aunt & uncle’s little piece of heaven on the Ottawa River, a place we vacationed at often when I was a kid, and have re-discovered the magic of it again in recent years.  It’s now become tradition to go there with my mom, my sister and brother-in-law and their kids for a few days every summer.

The Camp did not disappoint!  The weather was beautiful, the food was delicious, and we felt like everyone just slid into “camp life” very easily this time around.

Some of my highlights were: watching the kids play in the water (especially Danica, who bobbed around on her pet shark which she named Strawberry all day); laughing over Danica naming all the water toys – especially the beach ball named “Sniffon Pazlain”; becoming “one” with the kayak; swimming out to the floating raft; Chris’ exciting ski biscuit rides (he towed the kids around behind him in the kayak lol); celebrating my birthday “camp-style, thanks to Aunt Marion showing up with snacks, cake, decorations, gifts, and a party hat & red feather boa for me!; my mom sitting by herself on a log far back from the fire because she was too hot to sit closer; being so hot that we all dragged the lawn chairs down into the water & the fun that ensued; camp sunsets; playing Mexican Trains and listening to the Saturday night 70’s show on the radio (Caden has some moves!); and the boat ride.

Oh, I have to talk more about the boat ride!!

Camp 2015 2

As a kid, nothing delighted me more than when we were invited to go out on the boat with my aunt, uncle & cousins.   I loved the feel of the wind in my face, the little shiver of glee when hitting “bumps” on the water, the spray splashing my face… for me, an awesome boat ride is fast, fun, and includes a stop at the candy store!

I hadn’t been on a big boat ride like that in ages.  It was a trip down memory lane, and I loved every minute of it.  It was fun to have Caden & Danica with us as well, to experience one of my fondest childhood memories.  Danica sat on my lap and giggled at the same times I would, especially liking it when we hit the wake hard enough to lift her bottom right up off the seat.  It was also a trip to discover that the “candy store” we used to go to, which I thought was in another far-off land, was actually in Portage-du-Fort (a small town less than an hour away from home, which we drive through frequently!)

Camp 2015 1

It wasn’t lost on me that the day we went on the boat ride was also the 5th anniversary of my cousin Jeffrey’s passing, and it just felt… right.  A very appropriate  way to mark the day, I thought. In my fondest memories of boat rides as a kid, Jeff is always there.  I couldn’t help but smile and think that he was with us last Sunday, too.

Camp 2015 8

After 5 hot, fun days at the Camp, I was ready to come home – not so anxious to leave the peace and tranquility, the water and the sun – but ready for a cool shower, the AC, and my own bed.  Nothing makes me appreciate my creature comforts more that being without them for a few days!

The best part about returning home was the realization that I still had a solid 5 days of vacation still ahead of me.  I shopped, I ate good food, I watched movies, I read on the back deck, I celebrated my birthday with the whole family, and I was gifted my new camera!  I was thrilled to receive my Nikon D3200, which I’m already putting to good use – although still very much a newbie at photography, I’m workin’ on it!  Thank you, Family!!!

Vacation Week ended on a high note at a pool party with friends on Sunday afternoon at Lindsay & Ryan’s.  It was wonderful!!  Once again, we had perfect weather, the food was amazing, and it was so nice to visit with my gang, watch their kiddos in action, swim, sit, chat, eat… it was a Sunday afternoon of bliss, and I was sorry that it flew by so quickly.

Pretty sure I drove my friends nuts with all the photo “practicing” I did, but I hope some of the pics were worth it. ;)

Monday was a quiet day, which I spent enjoying the last moments of holiday time while trying to gear myself back up for my return to work.

I was pretty unsuccessful in “gearing myself back up”, as it turns out.  When my alarm went off at 5:40 AM yesterday, I wanted to cry.  I felt like a slug.  Literally, a slug.  I was sweaty and bloated and felt entirely gross.  The work-out was pretty miserable.  I didn’t start feeling decent again until evening.  (thanks to lots of water all day flushing those bad vacay toxins away, I guess!)

This morning was even worse.  I woke with a pounding headache (I HATE waking up with a headache!!) and again, the work-out sucked big-time.

I know it’s a good thing to get back into routine, but it sure isn’t much fun.

Next vacation… c’mon.  I’m ready. ;

Things that are making me smile (or giggle out loud)

The week before going on vacation is generally a feel-good week for me… so maybe that’s the reason I’ve found myself smiling or laughing so much this week.  But here are a few of the things I’ve had a good giggle over so far this week:

twitter feud

  • The video of Sam pulling Gabby the cat’s tail.  I wish I could share the vid, but I don’t know how.  Earlier this week, my friend Lindsay’s little guy Sam was staying with his grandparents, and NanaBev posted a video on Facebook of Sam pulling the cat’s tail.   He starts out gently tugging at it, while Bev warns him to be nice and gentle and stop pulling the cat’s tail… and yet, each yank is harder and harder.  Literally the most patient cat I’ve ever seen – it just lay there, sliding closer and closer to him with each pull.  I honestly thought he might pull the cat’s tail right off! LOL  I’ve gone back to watch it several times, and it makes me giggle each time I watch it!

Sam at Nana's Instead of the video, here’s a pic of Sam’s innocent look - “What? Me, make a mess???” – also while visiting his nana – photo lifted from Bev’s Facebook

  • Speaking of Facebook videos… I smiled from ear to ear last night when my friend Stacy posted a video of her 3-year-old Tanner singing her a lullaby.  It was one of the songs the kids love to sing at church with Rolly, “Halle Halle Halle-lujah”.  It was pretty priceless to hear Tanner’s rendition for his mommy!

Tanner silly Such a silly boy!  Photo lifted from Stacy’s Facebook

  • I had stopped in at my mom’s on Monday night, as she had my niece and nephew for a few days, and I wanted a quick visit with them.  They had just returned from a day out, and Mom had unloaded the car and was out watering her flowers, while the kids came ahead in the house.  Caden was down on the landing at the back door, and all of a sudden I heard him say, “Uhhh, I got water all over me.”  It turned out my mom had her sweet icicle pickles sitting there in an old ice cream pail (I have no idea WHY they were there on the steps)… Caden saw “Chocolate Swirl Ice Cream” on the lid and opened it, spilling a bunch of the pickling liquid on himself.  And on the steps.  It wasn’t until he had walked through the house that we realized it was pickle juice he had spilled, not just water.  And then there were sticky footprints through the house, as well as a sticky pickly mess on the landing.  It was the priceless look of innocence on his face that got me, though… “I thought it was ice cream… why does Grandma have PICKLES in an ICE CREAM CONTAINER?!”

Caden silly Silly Caden!  A pic from the camp last summer… and I have camp on the brain.

  • I always giggle when I’m watching Jimmy Fallon, but my favourite moment so far this week was when he and Adam Sandler did a “Lip Flip” – especially the part when Adam explains how Jimmy hurt his hand! LOL

  • I had ordered a few books from Amazon last week for some new vacation reading material, and they arrived last night.  When I opened the box up, I was shocked that the book “Grey” by E.L. James was so massive… Like, giant-Bible-sized huge.  (but obviously not Biblical in nature…lol)  Then I flipped it open and realized the print on the pages was MASSIVE.  I was like, “What the heck…?” Upon looking at the cover more carefully, I realized I had accidentally purchased the Large Print Edition of the book.  So I guess I’m not bringing it to the camp with me.  I can just imagine Caden and Danica peering over my shoulder and trying to figure out what I’m reading…sounding out the words…eeeep.  I remember friends saying when they read the 50 Shades books that they tried to hide the fact that they were reading them.  No way I can hide this one! Bahahahaha!

What has made you smile this week?  Hopefully you’ve had plenty of giggles, and if not, maybe this post provided you with one! :)

Happy THURSDAY friends!!!
